Scouting works because of trust around the fire. Scout Ashes is built the same way — so that the people in the chain are who they say they are, younger scouts are protected by their guardians, and anyone can raise a concern and be heard. Here is how that works, for parents and leaders alike.
Belonging is earned, not claimed.
Anyone can type a troop's name. Scout Ashes asks for more than that. Trust in the chain is built by the community itself — the scouts and leaders who already know each other — so an outsider can't simply declare their way in.
Real members only
A new member is confirmed by several people who already belong — and from more than one role, so it takes a genuine, varied group to vouch for someone. No single sign-off opens the door, which makes the circle hard to fake your way into.
Knowledge that can't be faked
A community knowledge check asks the small things only someone who was truly there would know. It's marked on our servers — the answers never travel to the app, and a wrong guess is never revealed — so it can't be copied, screenshotted, or guessed at.
Earned standing
Trust grows in steps. A new account starts with very little reach, and earns more only as the community confirms it. Standing can't be set by the person themselves — and if a concern is raised, it pauses while we look into it.
Built around your child.
For younger scouts, you are in the loop from the very first day — and nothing about your child is shared until you say so.
Your consent comes first
A younger scout's account stays private until a parent or guardian approves it. Until then it's in a quiet "embers" state — they can keep their own record, but nothing is shared and no one outside can reach them.
Locations stay vague
A campfire's exact spot is never shown to people outside it. On the map, fires are deliberately blurred to a general area, so a child's precise whereabouts can't be read off the screen by a stranger.
Only what's needed
We work from an age range rather than a child's exact date of birth wherever we can, and we collect as little as the tradition needs. Less held means less to ever expose.

Speak up, and you'll be heard.
Anyone can raise a safety concern — about a person or a fire — and you can do it without giving your name. Concerns go straight to people who handle them, and the most serious are treated as the priority they are. You can also block someone at any time.
Every safety action is written down — for good.
When someone is vouched for, a concern is raised, or standing changes, it's recorded in a tamper-evident log that can be added to but never quietly edited or erased. If a question is ever asked, there's an honest, ordered record to answer it — that's how trust stays trustworthy.

Verified leaders
A dedicated, community-confirmed standing for adult leaders, with a guardian sign-off step for any leader who is themselves under age.
Standing that's renewed
Trusted standing will be re-checked over time, so it reflects who is active in the community now — not only who was once confirmed.
Clear escalation routes
Formal pathways for passing the most serious concerns to the right external safeguarding authorities.
